Athena AI - a conversational concierge

Essemy is a leading Australian learning and development organisation. They design and deliver workplace learning across topics including leadership, culture, safety, communication, business improvement, and much more. Essemy draws on a team of 120+ experts; and their promise to clients is simple: Essemy listens to every need, every time, and delivers solutions with subject matter experts who have lived experience.

The problem was on the website. To work out whether Essemy could help, a website visitor had to search by typing specific keywords and hoping they got workshops or expert profiles that happened to use those very same keywords. That puts the burden on the visitor to already know what they're looking for and to guess the right language to search for it. A leader thinking "we've just restructured and my new managers are struggling to hold difficult conversations" has no way to easily explore how Essemy could address their needs.

What we built

AI Decision System, not a generic chatbot.

People now search the way they would chat to ChatGPT or Claude. They describe a situation in their own words, and want to have a conversation to help them think, research, and make decisions. Qode saw the opportunity to give Essemy's website the same experience. A way for a website visitor to explore what Essemy can do for their organisation by having a conversation, not by a simple keyword search.

We built Athena AI: a conversational agent embedded directly in Essemy's existing website. Athena is trained on - and continually learns from - more than 1,000 data points on everything Essemy offers.

When a visitor describes their learning challenge in plain language, Athena responds with focused questions to help the visitor better define the outcomes and business needs. Athena then explains what Essemy can offer with grounded recommendations of experts or workshops and a clear reason why those fit. Visitors are then guided to organise a Discovery Call with the Essemy team, now confident that Essemy is the right partner.

Qode's goal was to help visitors discover what Essemy can do for organisations Australia-wide - and turn that into a conversation. That's a lot more powerful than searching for keywords, clicking links, and waiting for web pages to load.

Qode also built a bespoke dashboard for the Essemy team to view Athena's performance. Conversations are logged and reviewed, so Athena keeps improving for the next visitor. The Essemy team can also monitor running costs, manage the chat interface content, and adjust Athena's underlying instructions to course-correct as needed.

A closer look.

How it works

Four steps, from first question to conversation.

  1. 01

    Conversational Discovery

Athena asks about the visitor's objectives and needs.

  2. 02

    Intelligent thinking

Once the need is understood, Athena searches its knowledge base (everything Essemy offers).

  3. 03

    Explain the fit

Athena doesn't just list options - it explains why each one fits.

  4. 04

    Human connection

Once a website visitor is confident Essemy can help, Athena invites them to book a Discovery call with the team.

“We found working with Qode to be highly professional, from scoping the project through to execution, the team were highly responsive, open to changing direction where needed and a pleasure to work with. Will be using again for our next tech project.
